Veterinarian Attacked by Seven-Pound Monkey, Lives to Write Book About It

TEXAS - A seven-pound monkey attacked a rural Texas veterinarian and he lived to write a book about it. However, that’s only one of the 28 stories he tells.

“Country Vet: Thirty Years of Treating Animals and Trying to Understand Their Owners,” a humorous memoir by Randy L. Skaggs, DVM, will be released on Sept. 1.

Dr. Skaggs has been journaling his daily life treating animals in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles for more than thirty years. As a rural animal clinic, his office has treated a variety of animals from dogs and cats to llamas and zebras and everything in between.

“My work can be messy, sometimes dangerous and often humorous,” Dr. Skaggs said. “I have the challenge of not only treating the animals but also working with their owners. The second part is often the bigger challenge.”

The book gives the reader a firsthand account of treating animals, and their owners, as a rural veterinarian.

"Vets have a kind of double vision on the human experience,” award-winning Hank the Cowdog series author John R. Erickson said. “They see us as the

clients who bring in the patients and pay the bill, but they also see our sins, flaws, and weirdness reflected

in our animals. Dr. Skaggs recognized early on that this was a rich source of humor-not ridicule, not humor that cuts, but the kind of organic humor that allows us to laugh at ourselves."

The book can be purchased at online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Barnes & Noble. It cost $19.95.

“When I first started my career, I began writing my experiences in a personal journal,” Dr. Skaggs said. “I figured the stories would be fun to remember my first years in the industry. But thirty years later, I am still laughing at all the wild stories that happen as a small town veterinarian on a daily basis. I hope my book will not only entertain the reader, but also encourage them to see the humor in their own lives.”
